The Hoshino Family are a family of recurring characters seen throughout the Katamari series. Michiru, the daughter, is the most prominent member of the Hoshinos due to her extraterrestrial connection with the Cosmos. Her older brother, Mutsuo, is a young boy with an eye for his surroundings. Their mother is named Mizue and she is based on the Japanese "shufu" cliché. Though she is caring and close with her kids, she is quick to deny the ridiculous claims Mutsuo may make. Her husband Tomino is an astronaut and the head of the family. The family owns a cat named Tom, who meows strangely.
According to jisho.org, Hoshino could mean a variety of different things. The meaning that makes the most sense is 'star field' (from the character combo 星野), though other meanings and ways of writing have been proposed, including:
The Hoshino family makes their first appearance in the cutscenes of Katamari Damacy. It all begins with the children watching Jumboman while Mizue tells them they are about to leave. After their mother leaves, the TV changes to show a news report on the disappearance of all the stars. Mutsuo informs his mother of the breaking news, to which she responds "Oh honey, things like that just don't happen." Michiru, Mutsuo and Mizue are then picked up in a cab outside of their apartment complex. At the airport, another news broadcast informs the listeners that the stars are slowly returning. Before Mizue could see report, the screen abruptly changes to a Tengu with a growing nose. Once again, Mizue is passive towards Mutsuo's claims. On the flight, Mutsuo looks out the window and sees the King over the horizon. Absolutely dumbfounded, he points and gasps at the window. However, when his mother looks outside, she just acknowledges the Top Shell Island. After departing from the flight, Mutsuo is seen with his mother and sister, peering through binoculars on a balcony. Michiru is told that her father is in the rocket, to which Mizue tells them that they will see their father soon. The three board a bus to the space center before a giant katamari is seen rolling across the trees. The large rockets impress their mother and inspire Mutsuo to become an astronaut like Tomino. However, their father is nowhere to be seen for awhile. After Tomino runs up to his family, he explains that the space mission was called off due to the moon's disappearance. Looking through the telescope, Mizue exclaims "My, it really is gone!" as she realizes her son was not lying. Mutsuo yells "Let me see, let me see!," leading to Michiru quietly asking as well. After the moon is remade, multiple cutscenes showing Mutsuo and his sister can be seen. However, if the moon is too small, Mutsuo will lament that his parents aren't there. When the moon is larger, he will exclaim that they are on a lunar family vacation.
Though the Hoshinos do not appear in We ♥ Katamari's cutscenes, they are still present in the game. In the Select Meadow, three of the family members host stages: Tomino hosts "Save the Earth!", Mutsuo hosts the Cousins stage and Michiru hosts the credits. Additionally, the cutscenes from the previous game are viewable in Japanese or Korean.
The family is also scattered out in various levels in the game. There are times that they can be rolled up or just appear as a fun cameo.
The family doesn't have a role in the story, but they can be found in various places in the Sunflower Continent. They are also seen in the intro cutscene for the game.

train which travels around The Princedom, allowing the player to jump in and travel around with them. This train can also
collide with stray cousins, somewhat upsettingly. The train is a good way to travel around the Princedom, however you cannot interact with Michiru and Mutsuo.
Thy only other time we get to see any member of the Hoshino Family is when certain DLC levels are downloaded and purchased. The Hubble Horoscope is the only level that features the entire family, while the Munchies Manor is the only level that features Tomino.
The Hoshinos are seen in the opening cutscene of the game. They can also be found in the reused stages in their same locations . We also get to see Mizue, Michiru, and Mutsuo at the end of Go! Jumboman!, just like one of the cutscenes in Katamari Damacy. However, Michiru feels the Cosmos falling asleep. The family can be seen in some of the dream bubbles in the "Gather Round, Children!" cutscene, which plays at the end of the game.
In this game, Michiru and Mutuso are the only ones that can be found. In "Snowman!", they're in their original places since this level is copied from the other games.
In the trailer, the family can be seen watching T.V. of the gameplay. Mutsuo and Mizue are the only family members seen in the gameplay. Mutsuo is in various parts of the stage and can be rolled up once in the town.
The only family member that we know of present in this game is Tomino in Stage One and Seoul. He is lying on the couch, just like in As Large as Possible 1. It's likely that this stage was ripped from We ♥ Katamari.
Cutscenes - The family is only found in the cutscenes of the game. They cannot be found or rolled up during any levels of the game, but will appear in your collection after making the Moon.

As Large as Possible 2 - Tomino is laying in a hammock in the first room and Michiru is standing in the playground outside.

Gingerbread House - Mutsuo and Michiru are standing outside of the gingerbread house.
Underwater - Tomino stands close to the shore, on the outside of the lake.
School - Mutsuo and Michiru are walking around the hallway. (May need to reset level to spot just one.)
Animals - Mizue is standing by the swamp area with Michiru and Mutsuo.
Campfire' - The entire family is by the lake, near the waterfall.
Cowbear - Tomino is resting on top of the tower of falling rocks. (Chances are he'll spawn here, or a bear will).
Cranes - Michiru is spinning around in the hallway with paper cranes in her hands.
Just Right - Medium - Tomino is standing in the door of a toilet stall while Mutsuo is standing nearby. (Tomino replaces the ninja in different scenery).
Money - Mizue is browsing kitchen items in the shopping center.
Snowman - Mutsuo is rolling in snow around the area while Michiru is riding a snowboard.
Sumo - Tomino's near the main arena relaxing with some grandmothers.
We ♥ Katamari - Tomino, Mutsuo, and Michiru are running away from the Sun.
1,000,000 Roses - The whole family is standing together in the ski resort, while Michiru is watching Tomino ride a tiger in the Akebono Circuit.
Ballerina Hunt - Mizue is standing by the swamp area with Michiru and Mutsuo. (Note they are in The King's past, most likely a mistake as Mutsuo and Michiru would not be born at this time.
Hubble Horoscope - The entire family is scattered around the area. Mutsuo is behind a play happing next to the mansion, Michiru is watching a polar bear cool down by the shops, Tomino is in the center of the docks looking at some statues and Mizue is on an island in the water with a luau girl.
Munchies Manor - Tomino is laying on a bed in the far corner of the supermarket.
Make a Star 2 - Calories - Tomino is laying on a bed in the far corner of the supermarket.
Make a Star 4 - Constellations - The entire family is scattered around the area, Mutsuo is behind a play happing next to the mansion, Michiru is watching a polar bear cool down by the shops, Tomino is in the center of the docks looking at some statues, and Mizue is on an island in the water with a luau girl.
Make a Star 5 - Underwater - Tomino stands close to the shore, on the outside of the lake.
Make a Star 6 - Animals - Mizue is standing by the swamp area with Michiru and Mutsuo.
Make a Star 8 - As Large as Possible - Mizue is standing on the balcony outside.

Mizue is standing behind the fence right when the player leaves the house, on the left side. She is also seen standing in the bus stop in the town part.
